1997 OCTOBER * The centre hosted theatrical representations of the classic Palestinian play Al Moutachael, (the Opsimist). The play is a monodrama starring Mohammed Bakri who adapted the Emile Habibi novel of the same name. The play is directed by Mazen Ghattas, and won the Israeli best stage actor award in 1986. * The centre screened three films, one about painter Max Ernst, one on painter Piet Mondrian, and the third on Palestinian novelists & poets: "Les Belles Etrangéres: Palestine". This last film is a documentary directed by Tunisian director Mustapha Hasnaoui for the French Centre National du Livre. It was made to accompany this year’s Palestinian cultural spring celebrations in France. It explores the themes common to Palestinian writers in Palestine and the Diaspora: exile, return, homeland, identity, etc.. the film features interviews with 10 Palestinian authors, among them: Fadwa Tuqan, Mahmoud Darwish, Samih Qassem, Sahar Khalifeh, Liana Badr, Elias Sanbar, Riad Beidas, Izzidine Manacirah, etc.. * French architect Catherine Rochant-Weil gave a lecture on the history of Bethlehem’s urban development. * Poet Zakaria Mohammed’s first sculpture exhibit opened (see Exhibits
