1998 MAY As this month coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Nakba of Palestine, all the activities organized were commemoration events: -Hala Sakakini described life in the Qatamon area of -now West- Jerusalem, the harassment, and shelling of the quarter, and the Khalil Sakakini family flight to Cairo a few days before the quarter fell. Also, four survivors of the Abu Shusheh massacre and the Jaffa exodus spoke of their experiences. - Poet and critic Dr. Hussein Barghouti gave a lecture within the “Palestinian Intellectuals & the Nakba Lecture Series” . -Finally, the concert due to be given by Austro-Palestinian Jazz musician
Marwan Abado was canceled, due to his 2 days incommunicado detention by
the Israelis at the Ben Gurion airport. Despite interventions from the
Austrian embassy, the Nazareth municipality and others, he was not allowed
in. Even though Abado holds an EU passport and performed in Palestine
in 1996, he was most probably refused entry this time, as he was due to
give a series of well publicized concerts in Palestine -and Israel- on
the Nakba.. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
