1998 NOVEMBER * As renovation work continued at the Sakakini, activities were kept to a minimum. Work continues on building the outer wall, storage room, new gate, and bookstore space. * Within our Nakba series of activities, the Centre hosted a lecture by noted short story writer Gharib Asqalani as part of the Palestinian intellectuals & the Nakba Lecture Series. He gave a moving and vivid personal account of a refugee’s life in Gaza, the hardships of occupation and exile, the return as a visit to his home in Majdal (now Ashqelon), etc.. The Sakakini also hosted a lecture by Dr. Salman Abu Sitta on the economic feasibility of the right of return of refugees to Palestine. * The Corsican polyphonic group Tavagna gave an exceptional demonstration of this traditional art form in a concert mixing Byzantine sacred music, & traditional secular chants. * The Kamal Boullata exhibit was extended, and a film documenting his 1984 return to Palestine: “Stranger at Home”, was screened. * Visual artist Samia Halaby, on a visit to Palestine, gave a lecture to a group of visual artists and art students, about her research into the Arab origins of modern art. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
