Greetings:
We present to you our monthly program for October 2001. It features
a poetry evening, a film premiere, an exhibit, a concert, two kids’
activities, and our monthly Book Club.
We are also pleased to inform you that the Sakakini will be holding 3 activities
at Beit Al-Hajar in Birzeit. The listing of activities will follow the Sakakini

***PLAY: “TAFASEEL SAGHEERI” FOR KIDS
(SMALL DETAILS)
**THURSDAY 4/10 @ 5:00 PM
The play incorporates the concept of the environment, taking care of it
and protecting it, in a fun and exciting way in this comedic production
for kids. Written by Mahmood Shuqeer. Starring: Hussein Nakhla, Aktham
Khoury, Musallam Jayyousi, & Fadi Ghoul. Music by Fadi Ghoul. Safar
productions.
** FILM PREMIERE: “KAWKAB AL-SHARQ UM KALTHOUM” (STAR
OF THE EAST UM KALTHOUM)
**SATURDAY 6/10 @ 6:00 PM
The film delves into the life, songs, and death of Um Kalthoum, intertwined
with the historical and political events in Egypt and the Arab world in
the last century. Directed by Muhammed Fadil, starring Fardos Abed-AL-Hamid,
Mahmood Yasin and others. 1:50 min. Arabic language, no subtitles.
**POETRY READING: YOUSIF SHAYIB
“WHO SAID I’M YOUSIF?”
** THURSDAY 11/10 @ 6:00 PM
Yousif Shayib will read poetry from his first and still unpublished collection
“Who said I’m Yousif?” with musical accompaniment. The
collection will be published later this year, it constitutes -according
to the poet- romantic scenes in surrealist visions, an attempt to understand
oneself. Yousif is a member of the Palestinian Writers Society, a journalist
and editor at Al-Ayyam newspaper, and the cultural correspondent for “Al-Wasat”
magazine. (Arabic)
**EXHIBIT: “LAMMA YNAWIR AL-MILIH” (WHEN SALT BLOOMS)

**TUESDAY 16/10 @ 6:30
Ross Georgeson is a British artist who resides in Gaza. The title of the
exhibit refers to a particularly bleak period within the last 9 months,
just one of many phrases concerning something that will never happen.
For the artist, when salt blooms is the strongest and most magical, and
although unlikely, the one thing that has always happened in Palestine
has been the unexpected. The exhibit consists of prints he made in Malaysia
and Gaza.
**CONCERT: URMAWI FOR ORIENTAL MUSIC PRESENTS “MAHAB AL-REEH”
**SATURDAY 20/10 @ 7:00 PM
The musical evening will consist of music & songs by Khalid Jubran,
Bashir Asadi, Wisam Murad and others. With an introduction by Dr. Nathmi
Ju’bi.
**BOOK CLUB: “QURMUTI” BY AHMAD RAFEEQ AWAD
**WEDNESDAY 24/10 @ 5:30 PM
This month, the book club will host Ahmad Awad for a book signing &
discussion of his fifth and latest novel “Qurmuti”. The novel
tries to shed light on the political, social, cultural and religious reasons
for the fall of a leader and the loss of power and authority. As an illustration
of that, the book centers on the theft of the Black Stone from Mecca by
Qurmuti in A.D. 920.
**FILM: “LU’BA” FOR KIDS!!!
**THURSDAY 25/10 @ 5:30 PM
Between imagination and reality a Palestinian kid makes his wishes come
true through the computer, and the identity of Sindibad and the magic
carpet. The film takes the kids on an aerial journey over Palestine. The
film will be followed by a discussion between the director, actor, and
the kids. Starring Fadi Ghoul, directed by Sai’d Andoni. Cinema
Productions Center. Arabic language (no subtitles). (Kids 4-10 invited.)
(Notice: The display of the patchwork of the Intifada shuhada mothers
is postponed to the 29th of November, “International day of solidarity
with the Palestinians”.)
Sakakini Video Club: The video collection hosts more than 500 English
language videos, classics and award winners. We are open to customers
Sat-Thr 9-3 and during activities.

**POETRY READING: MOHAMMED YAQOOB
**MONDAY 8/10/2001@ 6:00 PM
Yaqoob, head of the translation department at “Bayt Ishir”
House of Poetry will read from his new collection “Impersonating
a life” (antahil hayat) which will be published soon. In it he talks
about his struggle to continue living after a bullet hit him in his office,
which was targeted by Israeli shelling.
**EXHIBIT: “PORTRAIT” BY MUHAMMED SALEH KHALIL
** SATURDAY 13/10/2001 @6:00 PM
The artist completed the works of this exhibit during his stay at the
Cite des Arts in Paris, between December 2000 and June 2001. The Exhibit
is an adventure Khalil has undertaken to depict human faces in all their
different stages, from happiness to sorrow. The portraits are accomplished
with bold, angry strokes expressing the artist’s feeling about the
situation in Palestine during his stay in Paris.
**BOOK CLUB: “KHOTOWAT” (STEPS) BY IZZAT GHAZZAWI
** MONDAY 15/10/2001 @ 6:00 pm
Izzat Ghazawi will discuss his new best-selling book “Khotwat”.
The novel deals with issues of the Palestinian Diaspora and how it changed
over time. We invite you to read the book and engage in -a hopefully-
lively discussion with the writer.
