**FILM: "MEMORY OF FORGOTTEN STONES"

This documentary takes us on a journey to Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah
and Nablus, and to a number of Palestinian villages. The film shows the
destruction and abuse that traditional architecture in Palestine goes
through, and showcases the experiences of Riwaq in conservation and reconstruction.

** POETRY READING: "CHAOS OF FIRE" (FAWDA AN-NAR)

Conducted by young talented poets, this special reading will feature promising
poets from the editorial board of Yara'at, supervised by Tamer Institute.
They are: Buthayna Hamdan, Dalia Taha, Ra'ed AbuYoussif, Bassima Takroori,
Hadeel Karkar and Mohammed Jaber.
** EXHIBIT: "LANDSCAPE AND MAN" SHAREEF SARHAN

Sarhan's water-colour and acrylic paintings feature landscapes and human
figures rendered in various artistic forms. Sarhan, a graphic designer
from Gaza, participated in Jordan's Darat Al Funun Academy in 2001 under
the supervision of German Syrian artist Marwan Qassab Bashi. This is Sarhan's
first solo exhibit, and is part of an ongoing program of the Sakakini's
to showcase & support promising young artists.

The violin duo Nabeel and Clara will perform classical music pieces. Organized
by the National Conservatory of Music.
** FILM PREMIERE: "THIS IS NOT LIVING" (HAY MISH 'EESHI)

This documentary films a number of Palestinian working women from different
backgrounds and geographical locations in the West Bank, as they try to
go about their daily lives, and candidly discuss how they deal with the
Intifada, and how the Intifada has affected them.
(Directed and produced by Alia Arasughli. Arabic, Eng. Subt. 42 min. 2001.)
(The director will be present at both screenings to answer audience questions.)
** LECTURE: KHALIL SAKAKINI'S 124TH BIRTHDAY
** WEDNESDAY 23/1 @ 5:00 PM
We introduce our new project of annotating, editing and publishing Khalil
Sakakini's diaries, spanning 50 years of the history of Palestine, on
the occasion of his 124th birthday. The editor of the diaries, poet Zakaria
Mohammed will present the latest findings regarding the history of Palestine.
The information was acquired from research conducted on the early parts
of the Sakakini diaries, and will include information on Khalil Sakakini
as a young person in Ottoman times.

Oud duo of brothers Samir and Wissam Jubran will perform improvisations
as well as classic pieces from the Oud repertoire. Organized by the National
Conservatory of Music.
** BOOK CLUB: "SECRETS OF THE RED SEA" TRANSLATED BY
ISSAM BATRAN
** TUESDAY 29/1 @ 5:30 PM
Translator Issam Batran will discuss the newly published Arabic version
of "Secrets of the Red Sea" , a personal account by French nobleman
Henri de Monfried of the sailboat voyage he made through the Red Sea at
the start of the 20th century. The voyage took him to the shores of Somalia,
Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where the author spent months intrigued
by the nature, and the people surrounding him. This highly entertaining
book sheds light on an important historical period of colonialism in the
region.
