FEBRUARY PROGRAM

** ART FILM SCREENING: "Georgia O' Keeffe"
** WEDNESDAY 5/2 @ 6:00 PM

In this award winning documentary, legendary US painter Georgia O'Keeffe candidly reveals her warmth, humor and practical wisdom. For the first time on camera, O'Keeffe openly discusses her work and inspirations taken from the mountain deserts of New Mexico. (Dir. Perry Miller Adato, 60 min., 1977. Free screening.)

** CONCERT: "Janayen El Ghina" performed by TAMER ABU GHAZALEH
** SATURDAY 8/2 @ 7:00 PM

This concert launches the first cassette of the precocious 16-year-old Oud and Buzuq musician Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, titled Gardens of Song. Tamer is a former member of the Cairo-based Palestinian choir "Abbad El Shams", & is now part of the Urmawi Center for Oriental Music, in Jerusalem. The cassette may be considered an autobiography of Tamer's young career, featuring songs and pieces performed or produced starting from when he was 5 years old, & ending with his latest compositions at 15. Tamer has already performed in many countries, and notably after the opening of the "100 Shaheed-100 Lives" memorial at Beirut's UNESCO Hall. This concert is organized in co-operation with the A.M. Qattan Foundation.

** BOOK LAUNCH: "Maq'ad el Ghaeba" by Basima El Takroori
** MONDAY 10/2 @ 5:00 PM

In our continuous attempt to support young artists, we welcome young author Basima El Takroori to personally present her recently published first novel, A Seat for the Absent Woman. Basima has already published children's stories, and performed in short sketches of her writing during the Sakakini Open Summer Nights. The novel is published by the Palestinian Writers Union, & copies are available at the Centre for sale.

** OPEN DAY FOR CHILDREN
** 3RD DAY OF EID AL ADHA from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM

We dedicate this day to all children on their Eid vacation. A multitude of enjoyable activities are prepared, from free food and gifts, to music to dance to, as well face painting, clay work, painting on T-shirts and many other games in store! :) Children of our Shuhada & prisoners will also be invited to this event, sponsored by the United Palestinian Appeal.

** EXHIBIT: "Pottery & Copper" by KARIM DABBAH
** MONDAY 17/2 @ 6:00 PM

Veteran artist Karim Dabbah presents his first solo exhibition at the Sakakini, featuring works of ceramics & copper, reviving local and Islamic traditions. Most of the works are being exhibited for the first time.

** ART FILM SCREENING: "PICASSO: Portrait of an Artist"
** WEDNESDAY 26/2 @ 6:00 PM

Picasso's works are uniquely recognizable, yet no other artist has successfully mastered so many creative styles. He has dominated modern art with his prodigious outpouring of paintings & sculpture and given us new ways to look at art. This film provides us with a close-up look at both the life and works of the world's most famous artist. (Dir. Didier Baussy-Oulianoff, 82 min., 1985. Free screening.)

Thank you, & hope to see you at all these events!
