JANUARY PROGRAM
** PLAY: ABU SHAKER-THE INSTRUCTOR:
** SATURDAY 11/1 @ 6:00 PM
The 2002 version of this well known play comes to the Sakakini on one
of its stops in Palestinian towns & villages. A production of Ashtar
Theatre Company, the play uses the Forum Theatre process of audience participation.
Each production of Abu Shaker has dealt with a different social problem,
& in this latest version, Abu Shaker is a school teacher prone to
violence. The general theme is violence in schools & how to curb it,
against the background of violence & worsening conditions affecting
Palestinian society. Dir.: Barbara Santos. Featuring: Omar Jallad, Edward
Muallem, Shadi Zumurrod, Raed Ayasseh, Iman Aoun, & Mohammed Eid.

This documentary film tells the life story of the well known Mexican surrealist
artist, & analyzes her work, its evolution & influences. Free
screening.
** CHILDREN'S ACTIVITY: ITALIAN CLOWN GRAMPIED
** THURSDAY 16/1 @ 4 PM
A former math teacher turned performance artist, story teller, & clown,
will give a demonstration of a clown act with a difference. Grampied is
currently in Palestine as a member of the International Solidarity Missions.
** BOOK LAUNCH & DISCUSSION: "TOMB OF THE LIVING"
(MADFAN AL AHYAA) by WALID HODALI

This book features testimonies by Arab prisoners held in Israeli jails
for various durations. The stories of these young men's arrests &
unlawful jailings, dreams & aspirations, are recorded by Walid Hodali
who was recently freed from 13 years imprisonment himself. This is his
first book, recently published by Bayt-al-She'er. The book will be presented
by poet Mourad Soudani, in presence of the author.
** ART EXHIBIT: QASSIDAT BEIRUT by RACHID KORAICHI
** SATURDAY 20/1 @ 6:00 PM
We are pleased to host the second exhibit by renowned Algerian artist
Rachid Koraichi. This collection of prints was inspired by Mahmoud Darwish's
poem of Beirut about the Palestinian exile from the Lebanese capital after
the bloody 1982 Israeli invasion. The exhibit features prints made by
Koraichi, & the poem itself. The collection is a gift to the Centre's
permanent art collection, & is the second collaboration between Koraichi
& Darwish, after the "Nation in Exile" project.
