Palestine is said to be lacking in urbanity and urban culture. Based on her current research, Lisa Taraki argues that Palestine is witnessing the (re)birth of the Palestinian metropolis in one of the smallest urban centers, the city of Ramallah. She locates this within the context of post-Oslo state formation and the demographics of class, among other factors. She focuses on the consolidation of a new middle class, whose strategies for social mobility and distinction are crucial for understanding this transformation.
