**ART FILM SCREENING: "Caravaggio: Genius on the Run"

**THURSDAY 15/1/2004 @ 7:00 PM

The Italian baroque painter, Caravaggio, played a pivotal role in the development of a naturalistic style in the 17th-century painting. His use of models from the lower echelons of society in his early secular works and later religious compositions appealed to the Counter Reformation taste for realism, simplicity, and piety in art.

Equally important is his introduction of dramatic light-and-dark effects - termed

chiaroscuro - into his works.

(Dir. Derek Jarman, documentary, English Language, 45 minutes, 1999)

**CHILDREN'S FILM SCREENING: "Ali Baba & the Pirates"

island. Surviving the crash, Ali sets out for food and shelter. To his great surprise, he

finds his brother surrounded by four-handed pygmies that will help them to leave the

island. At last, they set sail on the high seas to search for their father. The boys

encounter shipwrecked pirates on a raft who capture their ship and turn the voyage into an exciting and amusing adventure.

(Dir. Zlata Belli, Animation, Arabic Language, 80 minutes, 2002)

**FILM SCREENING: "Chosen"

**SATURDAY 24/1/2004 @ 7:00 PM

A number of Afghani families are nervously waiting in the yard of the UNCHR offices in Tehran. Some of them have come from faraway cities in Iran. They all have one thing in common: they wish to go to Finland. However, when asked, many confess that they know nothing about the country. In fact some of them are hearing the name for the very first time. A delegation representing the Finnish authorities has arrived in Tehran to interview the candidates. the lucky few who are selected will move to Finland to start a new life; rejected ones will continue to struggle for a decent life in Iran, or have to go back to Afghanistan, which is being bombarded by the US forces. There are over 3 million Afghans in Iran and Finland is accepting only 200 refugees. To be chosen to go to Europe, for these Afghans, is like winning the lottery. Khaled, a 12-year old Afghan boy and his family are among those pre-selected by UNHCR and invited to the interview.

(Dir. Alexis Kouros, documentary, Persian, English & Finnish languages - Subtitles in

English & Swedish, 68 minutes, 2003)

**In cooperation with SHAML

**CRAFTS EXHIBIT: "A New Palestinian Product: Quilts & Patchwork"

**THURSDAY 29/1 @ 6:00 PM

Our Centre had invited artist & quilter Jenny Bowker to come teach three courses for

women in the basics of patchwork & quilting as part of the Sakakini’s work in

celebrating our Palestinian cultural identity and in the hope of incorporating quilting to our list of crafts and adapting our traditions to it. These courses were successfully

carried out to three groups of women from three different organizations; Ramallah

Women's Training Centre, In’ash Al Usra Society & YWCA. As follow up to these

courses and as an attempt to encourage the women in pursuing this newly found craft, the Sakakini has asked each particpant to make a quilt. These quilts will be on display in this exhibit, in hope to promote this "New Palestinian Product" and encourage the crafts!

**ALL ITEMS EXHIBITED WILL BE FOR SALE
