**TO RAFAH, Benefit
& Art Auction
**SATURDAY 4/9 @ 7:00
An initiative by
a group of Palestinian artists to launch an art auction on 24 art pieces.
The proceeds from the sale of the art works will go to support our people
in Rafah and it is a means of expressing the relationship of art with the
society and a contribution from our artists towards their humanitarian
duty. Help us say that we are "for & to Rafah". The auction will include a
poetry reading by Murad Soudani and a musical performance on the Qanoun by
Ibrahim Atari.
In cooperation with A.M. Qattan Foundation, Young Artists Forum,
Palestinian Artists League, al-Kasaba Theatre and Cinematheque.
**BOOK LAUNCH: Khalil Sakakini Diaries (1914-1918) Vol. II
**THURSDAY 9/9 @ 6:00 PM
The Khalil
Sakakini Diaries/ Vol. II were published in August 2004. This is the
second volume of the projected 8-volume comprehensive diaries of Khalil
Sakakini, covering almost 50 years of the history of Palestine, & details
of Khalil Sakakini's (1878-1953) personal and public life. The project to
gather, annotate, and publish the full diaries of Khalil Sakakini is run
by the Sakakini Centre in cooperation with the Institute for Jerusalem
Studies, and is funded by the Ford Foundation, the Prince Claus Fund, and
the A.M. Qattan Foundation. The editor of the series is Akram Musallam.
There is a foreword by historian Dr. Adel Manna'. Volume II covers the
last four years of the Ottoman rule in Palestine (1914-1918), the time of
the Orthodox revolution and World War I, in addition to the circumstances
of Khalil Sakakini's exile to Damascus.
**MEET THE ARTIST: Palestinian artist
ALEXANDRA HANDAL

Alexandra Handal is a London-based Palestinian artist who was raised in
the Caribbean and Latin America and was educated in the USA and Europe.
She obtained a BFA in Painting and minor in Art History at Boston
University, an MA in Studio Art at New York University and also pursued
parallel studies in Paris and Madrid. Her artworks have been included in
group exhibitions internationally, namely in Australia, Canada, USA, Latin
America and Asia.She is a finalist for the
Young Artist of the Year 2004- Hasan Hourani Award from the A. M .Qattan
Foundation, Ramallah. Alexandra Handal lives and works in London where she
is a Researcher at the University of Arts London/ Chelsea College of Art
and Design and is the recipient of the University of Arts London
Studentship Award.

**FILM SCREENING: "FRIDA"

This film tells the true story of Mexican painter and 20th century icon
Frida Kahlo (Hayek). From her complex and enduring relationship with her
mentor and husband, Diego Rivera (Molina), their place in Mexican society,
to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her
entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life
as a political, artistic and sexual revolutionary.

EXHIBITION: Hassan Hourani Young Artist Award 2004

The Khalil Sakakini Centre is one of the venues that will unveil the
opening of the exhibition by ten Palestinian artists participating in the
Hassan Hourani Young Artist Award 2004.
The exhibit will remain open from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm until the 30/9.
**MEMORIAL CEREMONY: EDWARD SAID
**SATURDAY 25/9 @ 6:00 PM
Edward Said, who has died aged 67, a year before, was one of the leading
literary critics of the last quarter of the 20th century. As professor of
English and comparative literature at Columbia University, New York, he
was widely regarded as the outstanding representative of the post-structuralist
left in America. Above all, he was the most articulate and visible
advocate of the Palestinian cause in the United States.
The Sakakini wishes to commemorate his dear memory with a variety of
cultural activities, such as poetry readings, and musical performances, on
the anniversary of his passing.
The program of the event will be announced soon.
**FILM SCREENING: "Secret Ballot"
**MONDAY 27/9 @ 7:00 PM
Award winner at five international film festivals, writer/director Babak
Payami's SECRET BALLOT is a satirical comedy that humorously sheds light
on the universal discrepancies of the voting process and gender
differences. It's Election Day on a remote island off the coast of Iran
and a ballot box is parachuted to shore. An unnamed soldier is assigned to
escort a female bureaucrat to gather votes. Together, they embark on a
chaotic journey, turning the island upside down desperately seeking
anyone's vote!
