"JOURNEY"

3 PHOTOGRAPHERS (AHMAD MALK, AYMAN AZRAQ & SAMI SHNAA)

The three artists in this exhibition all share in common their interest in the qualities and dynamics of light. The artist explore different aspects of light in particular the contrasting effects of light and shadow. Ahmed Maliki images explore the effect of light on everyday on objects in order to reveal their beauty and mystery. His interest lies in both the qualities of natural and artificial light and how they alter objects and the environment. In his series of night photographs light in the landscape is transformed into space and form. With just the traces of light captured on film, the places he photographs become unrecognizable and change into abstract compositions that encapsulate the dynamic and energy of light. Sami Said’s interest also lies in the effects that can be created by capturing light on film which he explores in relation to abstraction. He uses his photographs to create abstract patterns that confine the energy of light within space of the frame. Furthermore a series of his images also carry an aura of ambiguity. They invite the viewer to contemplate the elements that have photographed and their abstract and transient quality. Ayman Azraq’s interest lies in capturing the changes in light at moments between day and night at sunset and sunrise.  His photographs explore contrast of light on landscape and the human form particular in relation to movement and gestures and a number of his images impart a sense of romance. One of the striking images is of two figures hurriedly walking across landscape with goods in hand. The image carries all the resonance of the anticipation associated with a homeward journey at the close of day. In their series of photographs all three artists reveal different aspects of light and how it transforms place and form and creates different atmospheres, impressions and effects and they invite us to re-contemplate the elements of their images that are transformed with the play of light.
