The Artist:

Al-Hawajri was born in Breij refugee Camp, Gaza in 1976. In 1990 he studied drawing and painting at the YMCA in Gaza. In addition to two local personal exhibits, Al-Hawajri has participated in numerous local and international group exhibits. In 1997 he participated in the Palestinian Spring Cultural events in Marseilles, and Paris, France. He was also awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Arab League in 1998. In 1999-2000 Al-Hawajri was nominated by the Sakakini for two consecutive years to participate in the Summer Academy for Young Arab Artists at Amman's Darat al Funun, under the direction of Syrian artist Marwan Qassab Bashi. In 2000 he was short listed in for the 1st Abdel-Mohsin Qattan Foundation Artist of the year, Ramallah. Al-Hawajri currently works as one of the supervisors of the Visual Arts Program at the Red Crescent Society in Gaza City. He also works regularly as an art instructor in many local schools and summer camps.

The Exhibit:

"My inks are the black plait that connects me to the earth, my colors are inspired from the soil, my letters from history's lessons. I write words on animal bones, I draw symbols and letters recollecting archaic history where human's primitive instinct was that of an artist." (Mohammed Al-Hawajri)
