"IN THEIR MEMORY" is a memorial exhibit formed of a series
of 4 quilts, made up of 156 pieces of embroidery made over the last
2 years by the daughters, wives, mothers, & relatives of Palestinians
killed by Israel. Some pieces in the quilts were made by women who
were subsequently killed.
Each piece was made in loving memory of the lost relative, &
features verses of poetry, traditional motifs from Palestinian embroidery,
drawn or photographed portraits, etc… The vivid colors &
motifs often symbolize events from the Shaheed's life. The Shuhada
are men, women, teenagers, & children, killed by Israel in varied
circumstances, in their homes, while shopping, etc… &
come from all over Palestine, Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza, &
from inside the Green Line. "IN THEIR MEMORY" aims to
symbolically honor all those who fell for freedom throughout Palestine's
history, by celebrating their lives, & honoring their families.
This is the first memorial exhibit of its kind, focusing on the
families' work, & efforts at memorializing their loved ones,
through the use of local popular traditions. The 156 raw, beautiful,
& intimate pieces express the pain of loss, & the irrepressible
universal human longing for freedom. "IN THEIR MEMORY"
follows the 2001 "100 Shaheed-100 Lives" memorial exhibit;
part of the Sakakini's projects that fulfill the goal of recording
& disseminating the Palestinian narrative, by intimately &
creatively documenting the Palestinian collective experience, &
cultural heritage.
"IN THEIR MEMORY" also features a poster distributed
to visitors that bears in front the photograph of the 4 quilts,
& in the back, a photograph & biography of each Shaheed.
The memorial is based on an idea -& was supervised- by Adila
Laïdi, Sakakini Centre Director. The quilts were designed by
Lois Nakhleh, who donated her time and effort, & sown by
