PILGRIM: 20 Years of Photographs in Tibet
Richard Gere 6 - 2004

The Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre hosted an exhibition of photographs by US film actor, photographer, and humanitarian Richard Gere, from June 4, 2004 through June 23rd, 2004. This exhibition is being presented in conjunction with Mr. Gere’s visit to the area, and his ongoing commitment to support peace efforts in the region.

A total of 24 signed & numbered photographs were exhibited at the Sakakini. All are black and white, in an off white matte, in a black wood frame. The outer dimensions of each frame are 60cmx50cm. All photos are for sale, & proceeds from the sale will go entirely to support the Sakakini’s programs of art education & exchange for young Palestinian artists.

Richard Gere has already conducted 2 trips to Ramallah and Jerusalem in 2003 and 2004, meeting with civil society personalities and artists to learn first hand about the situation in Palestine. Richard Gere is one of the most prominent American film actors, having appeared in numerous films that have received wide popular and critical acclaim. Among his latest films was “Chicago”, which won the best picture Oscar in 2002. He is the founder of the Gere Foundation, which aims to provide philanthropic assistance to the causes and groups worldwide whose work represents the humanitarian goals that he has long supported - victims of war and natural disasters, HIV/AIDS, and addressing human rights violations occurring around the world. He is also actively involved with foundations such as Amnesty International & Naz Foundation.

“These photographs represent the spiritual and physical voyage I have taken through the various Tibetan communities of the Himalayan region from Zanskar to Tibet.” Gere continues, “Tibet exists on many levels; all of them heartbreakingly real. It is the pure land dreamscape of gods and goddesses. It is our last living link to the ancient wisdom civilizations and their hard won knowledge of the vast and profound secrets of the human heart and mind.”

Gere’s photographs are striking in their maturity—the work of a serious artist encountering a subject of cultural significance. There is a hushed, meditative quality about his art that is perfectly in keeping with its subject. Gere’s work acknowledges the shifting boundaries between spirituality and injustice, light and dark, good and evil, hope and grief that pervade human existence.
